The iPhone has had 3 iterations since it’s inception in 2007. Those models were seen almost as bandaids to the original model, adding features/changes that many thought should have been on the original iPhone. The latest, iPhone 3GS, was a pretty impressive phone but it should not have taken 2 years for Apple to get to it.
Finally, with the iPhone 4, we get a massive hardware update. The screen alone which is almost three times the resolution of the iPhone 3GS is reason enough to upgrade. The screen and the underlying graphics hardware running the iPhone 4 will finally be ready for the all the tasty HD content coming down the pipe.
iPhone 4 also brings us a much better camera (including a flash!) and video chat to other iPhone 4 users over wifi. How useful will this be? Not sure yet. All depends how much time you spend in Starbucks wanting to video chat with someone in front of everyone else in Starbucks. I see the video chat feature mainly being used by people who are at home but just want to video chat instead of merely testing or calling. Kinda cool. We’ll just have to see how good it works.
Finally, the design is slimmer and of a much higher quality than previous iPhones. Hopefully increasing battery life and reception. Neve a bad thing but we’ll just have to see when it releases on the 24th.
Long story short, any current iPhone user now has a reason to upgrade which has never really been the case. It’s also never a better time to think about making an iPhone switch for all you blackberry folks out there. You will live without BBM….I promise.
